Summary

It all starts on the one-hundredth birthday of Allan Karlsson。 Sitting quietly in his room in an old people’s home, he is waiting for the party he-never-wanted-anyway to begin。 The Mayor is going to be there。 The press is going to be there。 But, as it turns out, Allan is not… Slowly but surely Allan climbs out of his bedroom window, into the flowerbed (in his slippers) and makes his getaway。 And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving criminals, several murders, a suitcase full of cash, and incompetent police。 As his escapades unfold, we learn something of Allan’s earlier life in which – remarkably – he helped to make the atom bomb, became friends with American presidents, Russian tyrants, and Chinese leaders, and was a participant behind the scenes in many key events of the twentieth century。 Already a huge bestseller across Europe, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is a fun and feel-good book for all ages。

Absolutely amazing。 Extremely unpredictable。 And will definitely put a smile on your face。 It was a joy to read。

A funny, silly whirlwind of a book。 Great respite from serious reading。

I would of rated this higher but found the chapters of Allan's past so boring and painful to read。 The ending was done too quick, if there was less chapters on his past and more on the ending then this easily would of been 4/5。 I would of rated this higher but found the chapters of Allan's past so boring and painful to read。 The ending was done too quick, if there was less chapters on his past and more on the ending then this easily would of been 4/5。 。。。more

It starts out quite interesting and you wonder where it's going to go, but it all seems like a long story of a mildly interesting life being told by an old man。 Lots of unbelievable events with prominent political figures happen to one man who has now reached 100。 The story jumps around from present day to his childhood and his strange life progresses through the book, interspersed with his latest adventure as the book is titled。 It starts out quite interesting and you wonder where it's going to go, but it all seems like a long story of a mildly interesting life being told by an old man。 Lots of unbelievable events with prominent political figures happen to one man who has now reached 100。 The story jumps around from present day to his childhood and his strange life progresses through the book, interspersed with his latest adventure as the book is titled。 。。。more

Delightfully crazyAllen is like Forrest Gump on steroids。 No, not the running, but the uncanny knack of winding up being in the middle of some major event and meeting world leaders。

I really did not like having a prompt to read a book you DNF。 It has taken me years to become comfortable with not finishing a book and, so when I do DNF a book, I must have REALLY disliked it。 This book was completely absurd and not in a funny, good way although it was supposed to be。 The storyline is very Forrest Gump-like with our MC weaving in and out of all sorts of major historical events and playing a part in everything。 The main problem for me was that I just did not like the MC and he w I really did not like having a prompt to read a book you DNF。 It has taken me years to become comfortable with not finishing a book and, so when I do DNF a book, I must have REALLY disliked it。 This book was completely absurd and not in a funny, good way although it was supposed to be。 The storyline is very Forrest Gump-like with our MC weaving in and out of all sorts of major historical events and playing a part in everything。 The main problem for me was that I just did not like the MC and he wasn't the only disagreeable character either。 The blurb on the back had a lot of promise but instead getting an endearing tale similar to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (which is what I had hoped), I got an overly long-winded recitation of silliness and rude people。 。。。more

I loved this story。 At times I felt it went into a lot of detail, but in general a fantastic story。

It has come to my attention that most of Goodreads has no sense of humor whatsoever。 You DO know that this is a comedy, and some comedies are absurd, right?

I love when a book makes me laugh-out-loud and cringe a little bit thanks to its dark humor。 This book was such a fun read - great pace, interesting characters and a story line that is wholly unbelievable but entirely enjoyable。

Is it imperative to change careers every so often? And are those answers the secret to a long, happy, and healthy life? This was a book club choice and, per usual, not something I would have picked up on my own。 But if you're looking for an entertaining listen, I'd highly recommend giving Allan's story a listen。 。。。more

Light, fun story of the exceptionally lucky and deviously crafty Allan K beginning on the day of his 100th birthday and jumping back and forth through the prior century。 I will definitely read the sequel!

This is one screwy book。 It was not what I was expecting, but the author has a nice way of tying together all the pieces at the end。 If you can stand a little light-hearted murder and a lot of revision of history, you might enjoy this book。

I really liked this book :) it combined my research passion for gerontology, specifically focused on centenarians, plus the fun, exciting, and silly adventure that made the reading journey exceptionally enjoyable。 I found myself laughing aloud or smiling while reading several different sections。 The way that certain events unfold is hilarious 😆 It’s written in such a way that takes you back into glimpses of Allan’s life both in the past (where he meets a number of notable politicians) and in the I really liked this book :) it combined my research passion for gerontology, specifically focused on centenarians, plus the fun, exciting, and silly adventure that made the reading journey exceptionally enjoyable。 I found myself laughing aloud or smiling while reading several different sections。 The way that certain events unfold is hilarious 😆 It’s written in such a way that takes you back into glimpses of Allan’s life both in the past (where he meets a number of notable politicians) and in the present, where he is indeed on an adventure of a lifetime, meeting an interesting bunch of characters along the way。 ☺️ 。。。more

。。。more

With major Forrest Gump and The Man From Earth feels, this was an unputdownable and most enjoyable read。 The odds of a simple Swedish boy going on to be involved in the major events of the 20th century are incredible, but the narrative makes you want to believe that it's very easily possible。 I loved the titular character, Allan, and his idea that most conflicts can be resolved if the warring parties just talk their truths over a drink (or a few)。 But it's not all jokes and merriment, for there With major Forrest Gump and The Man From Earth feels, this was an unputdownable and most enjoyable read。 The odds of a simple Swedish boy going on to be involved in the major events of the 20th century are incredible, but the narrative makes you want to believe that it's very easily possible。 I loved the titular character, Allan, and his idea that most conflicts can be resolved if the warring parties just talk their truths over a drink (or a few)。 But it's not all jokes and merriment, for there are subtle commentaries on politics, religion, diplomacy, and even life。 Here's one:"Imagine that death was just like being asleep。 Would he have time to think before it was all over? How did I miss this book 10 years ago when it was first published。 I would categorize it as a cross between “A Man Called Ove” and Forest Gump”。 The adventures of the 100 year old man are juxtaposed with the adventures he has experienced in earlier years。 In short he met Mao, Truman, Stalin, and a host of other famous people while always remaining apolitical。 His singular talent of “blowing up things” helps him find his way to LosAlamos around 1945。 At 100 years old he befriends several hoodlums How did I miss this book 10 years ago when it was first published。 I would categorize it as a cross between “A Man Called Ove” and Forest Gump”。 The adventures of the 100 year old man are juxtaposed with the adventures he has experienced in earlier years。 In short he met Mao, Truman, Stalin, and a host of other famous people while always remaining apolitical。 His singular talent of “blowing up things” helps him find his way to LosAlamos around 1945。 At 100 years old he befriends several hoodlums, a thief, and a lovely red head with an elephant。 If that synopsis doesn’t make you curious then this is not a book for you。 。。。more

This author thinks he is so clever。 But oh, he isn’t。 The old man has no spark, no consciousness, no light in him。 What a pointless waste of life。 And a pointless waste of a story。

So fun and easy going but highly entertaining。 Life's circumstances enhanced this book for me with my neighbors father escaping his nursing house and showing up next door right after I finished the last page。 Then my husband says he finds a movie to the book I've been talking about for weeks。 Perfect ending for me。 Highly recommend this book for just a fun Careless read。 Loved this book!
